A great achievement badge does three things at once: it looks good in a grid, it tells a story about how it was earned, and it signals rarity the way a metal coin signals value. Badge design is where game design meets graphic design, and most projects get it wrong by treating the icon as an afterthought. This guide covers the tier systems players understand instantly, the shape and color rules that keep a badge readable at 32 pixels, and the motivation psychology that decides whether players actually chase your badges — or ignore them.
The tier system: bronze, silver, gold, platinum
Players already speak the language of metals, inherited from Olympic medals and decades of RPG loot tables. You do not need to explain it — you only need to be consistent. A working tier system maps rarity to color, and color to effort:
- Bronze (earthy brown, muted) — participation and first steps. Everyone should earn roughly 60 percent of the bronze set within the first session. These badges exist to teach the player that earning things feels good.
- Silver (cool gray-blue) — steady progress and skill building. Earned over hours, not minutes. Silver should feel like "I improved," not "I showed up."
- Gold (warm yellow, high contrast) — mastery. Reserved for the 5 to 10 percent of players who actually grind. Gold is the badge friends screenshot.
- Platinum / Diamond (icy blue-white or iridescent) — completionist trophies. There should be very few of these, and they should require completing the whole set. Their job is not to be earned by many, but to be coveted by everyone.
Aim for a launch ratio near 40% common, 35% uncommon, 20% rare, 5% ultra-rare. If more than 20 percent of your players earn the "gold" badge, it is not gold anymore.
Shape: the frame carries the rarity
While color handles rarity, shape handles recognition at a glance. Round medallions read as "official" and work for almost any achievement; shield shapes read as "protection, combat, quest"; stars read as "skill"; ribbons and rosettes read as "ceremony." The convention most indie games copy from Steam and PlayStation is a circular coin with a raised rim — it scales down beautifully and leaves a safe margin around the icon. Whatever frame you choose, use it consistently: mixing round, hexagonal and star frames in one grid looks like three different games. Reserve extra ornamentation — gemstones, double rims, glow — for the top tier only, so the eye can find the rarest badge in a wall of 50 without reading a single tooltip.
Color and icon rules that survive 32 pixels
Badges live in achievement grids at 64–128 px, and in chat or leaderboards at 32 px. If your design only works at 512 px, it fails in production. Follow these rules:
- One hero element. A single object — a sword, a flame, a boot — centered, filling 70 percent of the frame. Details die at small sizes; the viewer should recognize it as a silhouette first.
- Three colors maximum. Base metal, one accent color, one shadow/highlight. More colors make the badge look muddy when scaled down.
- No readable text inside. Names belong in tooltips. Text on a 32-px badge is an unreadable gray blur.
- High rim contrast. A darker outer ring separates the badge from both dark and light backgrounds, which matters because achievement grids sit on both.
Design the master file at 512×512 px and export the whole set at 128, 64 and 32 px. Our Achievement Badge Maker generates tiered round badges at exactly these sizes, and the Gold / Silver / Bronze Medal tool handles the classic three-tier coin look. For streamer loyalty programs, our Twitch Sub Badge Maker follows the platform's exact 18px/36px/72px upload spec.
The motivation psychology behind chasing badges
Badges work because they exploit three well-documented effects. Goal-gradient theory says people work harder as they near a finish line — this is why showing "3 of 8 badges earned" on a progress panel boosts completion more than showing the badges alone. The completion principle (a cousin of the Zeigarnik effect) makes unfinished sets feel like loose threads the mind wants to tie off: a half-filled trophy room is an itch. Loss aversion explains time-limited event badges — players fear missing the one badge that will never come back more than they desire ten ordinary ones.
Design consequences fall straight out of this. Make progress visible, always. Make every badge tied to a concrete behavior the player controls (badges for luck are frustrating, not fun). Keep at least one achievable path to a visible reward in every session. And be honest: fake "rare" badges that everyone gets destroy trust faster than no badges at all — completionists talk, and a community that knows your gold is free will stop chasing everything you ship later.
Common badge design mistakes
- Too many badges at launch — 100 badges on day one means none of them feel special. Ship 15, then drip new tiers.
- Unrelated visuals — the badge should visually echo how it was earned. A fishing achievement with a sword icon confuses players checking their wall at a glance.
- Dingy colors — low-saturation "mature" palettes look sophisticated at 512px and disappear at 32px. Punch up saturation and contrast for production sizes.
- No rarity legend — if players cannot tell bronze from platinum, the tier system is wasted. Show a one-line legend on the achievement page.

What size should achievement badges be?
Design the master badge at 512×512 px and export down to 128×128 for achievement grids, 64×64 for player profiles, and 32×32 for chat or leaderboards. Keep the main icon occupying at least 70 percent of the frame so it survives extreme downscaling.
What does a bronze-silver-gold-platinum tier system mean?
Tiers communicate difficulty at a glance: bronze for easy participation achievements, silver for steady progress, gold for mastery, and platinum or diamond for near-impossible completionist goals. Players should instantly know the rarity of a badge just from its color.
Should badges have text on them?
No. The icon alone must read at 32 pixels. Names and descriptions live in the tooltip or achievement list; text printed inside the badge becomes an unreadable smudge at small sizes.
How many badges should a game launch with?
Start with 12 to 25 badges in a clear rarity ratio — about 40 percent common, 35 percent uncommon, 20 percent rare, and 5 percent ultra-rare. Too many badges at launch dilute the prestige of every single one.
