Chroma key — the technique behind every weather broadcast and every Marvel explosion — is embarrassingly simple at its core: pick one color, and make every pixel that is "close enough" to that color transparent. Hollywood spends fortunes on even lighting and painted green walls so the computer has one unambiguous color to erase. You can run the exact same algorithm in this page for free, on your own images, with no studio. The catch is that "close enough" is the whole game, which is why the tolerance slider exists. Turn it to zero and only the exact green you picked disappears; turn it up and it eats brighter and darker shades of green too, along with any green accidentally inside your subject. Start with tolerance around forty, which is the default. If a halo of the old background still rings the cutout, push tolerance up in steps of ten until the ring vanishes. If the edges of your subject start getting nibbled away — a fringe of hair turning transparent, a curved edge going jagged — back tolerance down and instead raise Soft edge. Soft edge is the feather: it does not erase pixels, it fades them out, so a boundary that looks too hard becomes a natural anti-aliased transition. Think of tolerance as "how much background color counts as background" and soft edge as "how wide the fading zone is". Most good stickers end up at tolerance 30-60 with soft edge around 15-25.

Other background-removal sites are usually "AI cutout" tools that upload your photo to a cloud server, run a neural net, and send back a result — impressive, but it means your photo left your device, often at a compressed resolution. This page does the simpler, deterministic chroma-key math locally, on the full-resolution canvas, with nothing transmitted. Be realistic about what this method can chew through. It erases a color, not a person. A photo of your friend in a crowded street cannot be cut out this way, because there is no single background color — the world is the background. Nor can fine hair against a textured wall, or a reflection on a glass surface. For those jobs you want a machine-learning auto-cutout, which is a different and heavier kind of tool, and usually an online one that uploads your image. This page stays deliberately light: it solves the boring-but-common case — a logo on a solid color, a product photo on white, a sticker you drew, a reaction face on a flat backdrop — instantly and privately. If your image is not on a flat background, a screenshot or a flat-color redo will save you more time than fighting the tolerance slider.
