The circle is the friendliest shape in interface design. It has no corners to clip awkwardly, it nests neatly inside rounded buttons and list rows, and it reads as a "person" at a glance — this is why nearly every social product turned avatars circular in the last decade. A square avatar, by contrast, keeps fighting the rounded container the platform forces on it. Because a circle needs a square canvas, a tall portrait or a wide landscape photo gets trimmed on two sides. The zoom slider lets you choose which part survives: zoom out to keep more of a landscape scene, or zoom in to center a face. If your original is already square, the whole image fills the circle with no trimming. The transparent corners mean the same PNG works on light and dark avatar backgrounds, and the optional ring adds a separator between your photo and whatever color sits behind it. The most common mistake is letting the subject touch the edge of the circle. A forehead cut off at the rim looks accidental, while a centered head with a small margin looks deliberate. The second mistake is using a low-resolution photo: a 200px avatar stretched into a 1024px circle goes blurry, so start from a photo large enough to fill the circle. The third is forgetting that the corners are transparent and then placing the PNG on a page with a similar background, which hides the shape boundary. If you want a hard edge between circle and background, turn on the ring; if you want it to blend, leave the ring off and the transparency does the work.
