The mapping chain is short but worth understanding. First the tool shrinks your photo to a coarse grid, where each grid cell corresponds to one character. Then it converts the color inside that cell to a single luminance value from 0 (pure black) to 255 (pure white). Finally it walks down the character set you chose — " .:-=+*#%@" for the classic look, shade blocks for the terminal look, digits for a numeric look — and picks the character whose ink density matches that luminance. On a white background, pure black pixels become @, midtones become + or #, and bright pixels collapse into spaces. On the inverse dark theme the rule flips: white pixels fill with @ and black pixels disappear. That is why the same photo looks completely different the moment you switch the character set.

The column slider is the one control that changes everything. At 40 columns the image becomes abstract and poster-like; at 80 it stays recognizable while still looking like text; above 140 the result needs a wide screen to read at all. The tool compensates for the fact that monospace characters are roughly twice as tall as they are wide, so rows are automatically calculated as columns times the photo's aspect ratio times 0.5. The most common trap happens after the copy: pasting the string into a proportional font breaks every column, because letters like i and w no longer share the same width. Always paste into a monospace text field — code editors, monospace chat blocks, and plain-text editors — and turn off automatic line wrapping, otherwise the long rows fold and the portrait turns into mush. The second trap is low-contrast input: a soft photo with no shadows collapses into spaces, while a high-contrast logo or silhouette converts dramatically. A quick mental test: if you can read the photo in pure black and white, the ASCII version will read it too.
